Software for Starving Students. . . and Anyone Else!

SoftwareFor
www.softwarefor.org
is the website for downloading Windows PC and Mac CD image files (.iso) which can then be burned to CD using CD recording software. As it says on the website, “Software for Starving Students is a free collection of programs organized for students (but available to anyone). We’ve gathered a list of best-in-class programs onto one CD (one disc for OS X, one for Windows), including a fully-featured office suite, a cutting-edge web browser, multi-media packages, academic tools, utilities and more.”

This software comes from the open source community; in other words, software developers essentially donate their time and effort to produce good software free or inexpensively. But free does not mean inferior. Each disk contains a office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program), multimedia player, disk recording software, audio editing, anti-virus program, and over 30 other top-notch programs. Go to http://softwarefor.org/faq.html for the complete list.

I use a number of the programs on a regular basis. Making copies of their CDs is highly encouraged by them, and makes good gifts to fellow computer users.
